In a generation saturated with minion rappers, dancehall artists and all manner of wannabe” musicians vying for the coveted status of next big thing, the story of Kumasi born, Kay Kwansah (Benjamin George Kwesi Kwansah Appiah) is a refreshing exclusion to the quick route for fame and success.
Signed to M.i.2K World Entertainment, an independent label, co-signed and managed by Gospeltown Africa, Kay Kwansah makes himself noteworthy through his refreshingly funny but realistic approach to addressing the issues around him in his music, no small feat considering his unassuming academic looks.
If earlier single releases didn’t do justice to announcing his arrival in the game, his release of the 7 track “D.A.R.E” EP on November 5, 2016 at the Holiday Inn has all but silenced critics on his abilities as a songwriter, musician and performer. Produced by Decorus Beats and Bright Dadson, AKA, Mr. B, Kay Kwansah’’s strong soulful lyrics touch on everything from the sexual, emotional and social frustrations of every growing young adult to finding his feet in his faith and charting his own path in a society where parental approval in a chosen career is usually the prerequisite to success. The EP encapsulates not just who Kay Kwansah is as a rapper, but who he is and where he’s come from as an artist and a person.
His first video ‘“Battle Winner’”, a track off the “D.A.R.E” EP refreshingly deviates from the norm and projects life’s challenges as a race where all can possess the same equipment and probably even journey on the same path, but the ultimate victory does not result from how well one prepares or races, but from who/what one puts his faith in.
