Broken glass floats in the afternoon breeze.
The loud boom from the stereo blocks out all sound.
Fair Paul sees it;
He has been deafened by the stereo speakers.
He sees it, he doesn’t hear it crash through.
Paulie as moms call him; rushes away from the shattering window panes.
He kneels below d window, a safe height for a 5 year old.
The once airborne brick rolls and rests on his bare foot.
The chanting grows louder
It swallows the stereo song.
the murder in their roaring voices swells then explodes spilling into the air their evil intent.
Hot and salty
Urine leaks from his bowels n smear his shorts.
The teeming crowd sway in unison like trees….
Left, Right, forward, backward.
Jim Cox-the towns super
Stares through cold, dark and bloody eye holes.
He bends forward, like unseen powers were pushing weights on him.
Suddenly he springs up then sways faster..
From the depths of his throat, comes a blood curling sound.
Jim is singing.
Like falling dominoes, the song is passed from lip to lip.
Fair Paul hears this.
He wets his shorts once more.
Hugging his knees to him, he wishes mummy was here.
She’d know what to do.
The mob is getting closer.
Guided by the stench of his fear.
Big ol’ Bob left Paulie in charge….
He held Paulie’s hands as he sucked in his last.
Paulie was just three.
But he understood Bob’s words.
Failing hearts, weeping faces glide around him as he beseechs Bob to stay longer.
His reply is a dead muted face.
Storming back to reality,
Paulie’s little pounding heart exhumes all fear
A promise made crashes through his sub-concious
A debt owed to a dying Bob,
Some two timid years back.
Like puppet strings tugged,
He bolts to his wobbly feet.
Staring out the shattered window,
He gazes into each sunken, empty eye hole
The dead crowd sway in unison.
Paulie stares in damnation.
Their mouths crack open,
Their dead arms reach forth.
Ready to expunge the life in his fear.
Paulie stands fast and radiates no fear.
Like the roaring thunder,he screams.
A defiant plea for courage.
This mob see no feed.
Turning their backs to him,
They sway to the east, their hunger not fed
Paulie has given them no fear to feed on.
